Harmonica Almanac – September 5

Classical composer Gordon Jacob was born on this day in 1895. Jacob wrote “5 pieces for Harmonica and Orchestra” for Tommy Reilly and “Divertimento for Harmonica and String Quartet” for Larry Adler.

Blues singer, keyboard and harmonica player Roman Griswold joined his brother in 1959 to form the group, The Griswolds. They performed steadily well into the 2000’s. Griswold was born on this day in 1936.

Actor Michael Keaton was born on this day in 1951. Whether or not he actually plays the harmonica, Keaton’s character in the movie Jack Frost was the harmonica-playing frontman for a band.

Chicago area blues guitar and harmonica player Dan Bellini emerged in the 1990’s as part of the group, Howard and The White Boys”. Dan is also an artist and Blues historian. Bellini was born on this day in 1965.

Best known as one of the greats of Chicago Blues guitar, Louis Myers died on this day in 1994. Like most Blues players, he could also play the harmonica, but he also managed to play behind Junior Wells, Little Walter, Muddy Waters and host of others.

Rising Blues harmonica star Nic Clark was born on this day in 1995. Nic has been making a name for himself in the Denver area and won a SPAH youth scholarship in 2014.

Blues singer, piano and harmonica player Katie Webster began her career playing around Dallas, Texas before moving to Louisiana in 1959 and becoming the house piano player for Jay Miller’s studio. Webster died on this day in 1999.
