Harmonica Almanac – May 14
Country singer, guitar and harmonica player Foy Willing was born on this day in 1914. Willing learned to play the harmonica when he was in his teens, but stopped playing professionally in the late 1930’s. In the mid-1950’s he got back into music and continued working on and off until his death.
Cream’s lead singer and bass guitar player Jack Bruce would also play the harmonica from time to time. Bruce probably got some instruction on the instrument from his mentor, Cyril Davies. Jack Bruce was born on this day in 1943.
British singer and harmonica player Keith Relf died on this day in 1976. Relf fronted the group, The Yardbirds and played the harmonica on many of the band’s records. He was heavily influenced by Chicago Blues harmonica players and the Yardbirds even backed up Sonny Boy Williamson II when he came to England.
That’s it for today. Have fun and practice!
