Harmonica Almanac – March 21
Folk singer guitar and harmonica player Sam Hinton was born on this day in 1917. Hinton started working as a folklorist in the mid-1930’s and made his first recordings in the late 1940’s. He would sometimes play the harmonica without a neckbrace, simply placing the harmonica in his mouth and tongue-blocking out the notes.
Best known as one of Chicago’s leading Blues piano players, Otis Spann could also play some harmonica as well. He worked with most of the greats of the Chicago music scene during his career. Spann was born on this day in 1930.
Blues singer, guitar and harmonica player Gaye Adegbalola was born on this day in 1944. She has spent most of her life as a teacher, but took up playing professionally in the mid-1980’s. She and Ann Rabson co-founded the Blues trio, Saffire: The Uppity Blues Women.
That’s it for today. Have fun and practice!
