Harmonica Almanac – March 20

Country guitar and harmonica player Frank Hutchison was born on this day in 1897. He began playing at the age of eight and was working professionally by the 1920’s. He recorded 32 songs before quitting music entirely during the Great Depression.

Blues guitar, jug and harmonica player Frank Edwards learned to play harmonica while growing up in Florida and by the age of 17 he was working with Tampa Red. Edwards was born on this day in 1909.

Cajun fiddle, guitar and harmonica player Dewey Balfa was born on this day in 1927. Balfa founded The Balfa Brothers Band and became one of the leading proponents of traditional Cajun music.

Country harmonica sensation Mike Caldwell played with Loretta Lynn for many years and now he’s got his own music park in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee. He’s also a nice guy and very generous with his knowledge. Mike was born on this day in 1962.
