Harmonica Almanac – June 9
Legendary guitarist Les Paul was born on this day in 1916. In addition to being one of music’s top innovators, Paul also played the harmonica, playing on a neckbrace he designed that allowed him to switch between two diatonic harmonicas.
Country-Swing singer and harmonica player Billy C. Farlow not only fronted Commander Cody and His Lost Planet Airmen, but also recorded with Homesick James, Sam Lay and others. Farlow was born on this day in 1949.
Jazz harmonica player Sandy Weltman was born on this day in 1956. Weltman has studied with Howard Levy and incorporates overbends into his playing which takes him beyond the more traditional forms of Jazz.
Best known as a Jazz singer and saxophonist Big Clarence Miller could also play several other instruments, including the harmonica. Miller died on this day in 1992.
