Harmonica Almanac – February 24

Blues guitar and harmonica player Elmon Mickle, otherwise known as Driftin’ Slim was born on this day in 1919. Mickle learned how to play the harmonica from John Lee “Sonny Boy” Williamson and later worked with Sonny Boy Williamson II.

Jazz harmonica player Jan Verwey has worked with a number of jazz greats as well as recording several albums of his own music. Verwey was born on this day in 1936.

Rock singer and harmonica player Paul Jones was born on this day in 1942. Jones worked with the group Manfred Mann from 1963 to 1966. In the 1970’s he put together the group, The Blues Band and has also worked with Eric Clapton, Dave Edmunds, Gerry Rafferty and others.

Blues guitar and harmonica player Tom Shaw was taught how to play the harmonica by his father. In the 1920’s he worked with Blind Lemon Jefferson. After moving to California in 1934 he only performed once in a while. Shaw died on this day in 1977.
