Harmonica Almanac – December 16

Blues harmonica player Sugar Blue was born on this day in 1949. He burst onto the international musical scene when he was asked to play harmonica on the Rolling Stones’ “Some Girls” album. He has been a fixture in the Chicago music scene for years.

It was on this day in 1965 that the harmonica became the first musical instrument in outer space when astronaut Wally Schirra played Jingle Bells on a Hohner Little Lady while flying aboard the Gemini IV mission.

Harmonica player Chris Michalek passed away on this day in 2010. Chris, along with Paul Messinger helped to organize harmonica gatherings that brought together some of the best harmonica players in the world. I attended their Harmonica Summit in 2000 and learned an immense amount of information on harmonica.

That’s it for today. Have fun and practice!
